About Howard Mangel, Ed.D.

Howard Mangel, Ed.D., has been a licensed psychologist in New Jersey since 1989; he has worked as a psychologist since his Internship in 1984-85, after working in vocational counseling and testing for five years.

Dr. Mangel completed his doctorate in Counseling Psychology at Rutgers University's Graduate School of Education in New Brunswick in 1985.  He earned his Master's degree in Counseling at Syracuse University (1978) and his Bachelor's degree in psychology from Drew University.

Counseling Psychology and Neuropsychology are a good mix, Dr. Mangel has said, because they combine two complimentary sets of skills, allowing the practitioner to develop understanding, empathy and treatment skills to help patients in important ways:

  • To help persons experiencing unexpected health and medical problems to cope and recover, while at the same time, the knowledge of cognition (thinking) and how cognition is affected by Neurological changes (from injury to the brain and/or medical conditions ranging from stroke to brain tumors, Multiple Sclerosis, dementias and related conditions) is provided by training in Neuropsychology.  The two sets of ideas, together, help clinicians like Dr. Mangel to understand his patients from the Neuropsychological and medical side as well as in terms of the patient's life experiences and how they prepare him or her for the challenges of recovering or coping with brain related problems.

Dr. Mangel has worked in Neuropsychology since 1985; first at the Center for Head Injuries at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute in Edison, from 1985 to 2006 (including part time work there from 2000 to 2006); the opening of a private practice in Somerville in 1990; with the move in 2008 to 17 West Cliff St, Dr Mangel is moving across the street from his first office, and the 'good karma' of coming back where it started is hoped to be a comfortable one.  Dr. Mangel has also consulted at St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center in Lawrenceville, NJ.  He has taught undergraduate psychology as well, at Montclair State College (now University), Trenton State College (now The College of NJ) and Rider University.

In addition to his professional practice and teaching, Dr. Mangel has been active in state organizations, including the NJ Psychological Association (member, Committee on Legislative Affairs, 2007-present) and the NJ Neuropsychological Society (Past President, 2004; Editor of Newsletter, 2003; Board member, 2008-present).  He has consulted with major corporations regarding health psychology matters, given presentations before professional and community organizations and coached youth baseball and softball.  He is the married father of three and enjoys watching a good game of pro baseball on a warm summer day.  He has learned in this process the arcane art of scorekeeping, as well as resilience and perseverance through good seasons and bad.

FAQ: What is an Ed.D. degree? Is it different than a Ph.D. or Psy.D.?

(Dr. Mangel has an Ed.D. rather than a Ph.D. or Psy.D. because the Rutgers GSE only awarded this type of doctorate.  However, the training is equivalent and only individuals with the appropriate qualifications in psychology, regardless of which of the three degrees--Ed.D., Ph.D. or Psy.D.--they have are able to apply for licensing as a psychologist in New Jersey.)
